Apple launch event: September 1 *<--correction*

According to reports, Apple is all set for a 7 September event to announce some new kit.

So what can can we expect to see?

The red hot favourite has to be the fourth generation iPod touch. The first version was launched in September 2007, the second in September 2008 and the third in September last year. It's not a case of putting two and two together, it's even easier than that.

The fourth-gen iPod touch is said to include a front facing camera, as first revealed by an over-zealous John Lewis spokesman, and backed up by numerous leaked assembly line shots.

We're also expecting a gyroscopic sensor like the iPhone 4, an Apple A4 chip and a 5-megapixel camera with a flash. We're hoping for the same retina screen as the iPhone 4 as well.

The next likely candidate is a revamped Apple TV, which may even launch with the iTV moniker that Jobs and the boys originally wanted when it was originally launched back in 2007.

There are strong indications that the new platform will be a $99 device (so probably £89 here in the UK) and that it will have iOS on board, giving your TV a gateway to the App Store.

Bloomberg is also reporting that Apple is in discussions with News Corp with a view to offering shows from its network for rental on Apple devices - for 99c per 48 hours - and that talks with other media companies regarding a similar setup are ongoing as well.

This would coincide nicely with an Apple TV launch on 7 September. We can see Jobs up on stage now, turtle-necked up, watching a bit of rented Family Guy during a keynote demo.

So the iPhone touch 4G and Apple TV are what everyone is expecting, but could Apple throw something in from left-field? After all, Pocket-lint recently reported on iOS 4.1 beta testing on not only a new iPod, but a new iPad and an unknown device as well.

It's highly unlikely, although if we were to have a cheeky punt on an outside bet then we'd go for a smaller-screen iPad. Just 50p each-way at 100/1 mind. We don't hold out much hope.

Cant wait for the official version? and want to get CineXPlayer for iPad on your iPhone and iPod touch right now? For those of you who don’t know, CineXPlayer is an iPad only app which allows you to load Xvid AVI files via iTunes so that you can easily play the format which Apple doesn’t allow. Since the developer hasn’t come up with an iPhone version of the app, a hacker decided to do it all by himself.

Full step by step tutorial on how to get it on your iPhone or iPod touch can be found here. You will have to jailbreak your iPhone and iPod touch, as the process involves SSH’ing into your iPhone, but worth it if you want it right away! Here is the video, showing CineXPlayer running on iPhone/iPod touch.

The title says it all! Yes, you can now get very alpha version of Flash (aka Frash) running right on your iPhone 4. Previously, we showed you how to install Flash (Frash) on iPad. And now folks at Grant Pannell site has managed to compile an iPhone 4 version of Flash. The credit for this of course goes to Comex, the guy behind Spirit and JailbreakMe tools for iOS devices. Without his hard work, this surely wouldn’t have been possible.

Simply follow the instructions posted below to get it working on your iPhone 4. According to the source, this version of Flash (Frash) will also work on iPhone 3GS, iPad (on 3.2.1) and iPod touches. I have tested it on iPhone 4, running iOS 4.0.1 only and can confirm that it works. You can see it in the video embedded below.

The installation instructions..

Warning Note: This guide is for testing & educational purposes only. Follow it on your own risk. I’m not responsible for any loss of important data or malfunctioning of your iPhone.

Step 1: First up, you will need to jailbreak your iOS device. Follow the guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone 4 with JailbreakMe, here to jailbreak your iPod touch 3G and 2G, and here to jailbreak your iPad.

Step 2: Next, you will need to install OpenSSH. To do this, Open Cydia, touch on “Search” tab and then search for “OpenSSH”. Install this app and reboot your iPhone.

Step 3: Connect your iPhone with your computer. Make sure iTunes is not running.

Step 4: Download and install Cyberduck for Mac or WinSCP for Windows. Enter the following details to login to your iPhone:

Cyberduck

  • Server: The IP address of your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. Settings –> WiFi –> <Your Network Name>
  • Username: root
  • Password: alpine
  • Protocol: SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)
WinSCP

  • Hostname: The IP address of your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. Setting –> WiFi –> <Your Network Name>
  • User name: root
  • Password: alpine
  • Protocol: SCP

Step 5: Download Frash-0.02.deb file from the source link given below.

Step 6: Navigate to /var/root/Media directory and create a folder named “Cydia”. Inside this Cydia folder, create another folder and name it “AutoInstall”.

Posted Image

Step 7: Copy over the Frash-0.02.deb file in this “AutoInstall” folder.

Posted Image

Step 8: Restart your iPhone and you are done. Now simply browse any Flash based site, click on the “Flash” text to play the Flash content.

Last but not the least, Credits: Comex for the Frash port, Grant Pannell for iPhone 4 compilation. [Thanks to Youtnell for sending this in!]

New Images of 4th Generation iPod Touch LCD with FaceTime Camera

An iPhone parts supplier sent us these photos of what are claimed to be the front LCD and bezel of the upcoming 4th generation iPod Touch. The new part clearly shows a front-sided hole that would leave room for a front-facing FaceTime camera.

While we've seen similar parts before, this part is clearly marked as an Apple part "Apple © 2010". This stamp is visible in the full resolution image. The part is also stamped with April 29, 2010, indicating that the build date is relatively recent. We've seen other iPod Touch parts circulating in the past. In particular, a back-side camera model reached a late prototype stage last year but was never released.

Apple is widely expected to release new iPod Touch devices this fall. Rumors had already pegged the new Touch to likely carry a front-facing camera. Apple will be using email addresses instead of phone numbers to initiate FaceTime calls.

**The new iPod touch is currently rumored to get iPhone 4 like Retina Display, cameras on the front & back, and a 3G capable model like iPad 3G.**
